Lobbying Industry
While there is nothing wrong with lobbying—petitioning a legislator or other government official—with regard to an issue of importance to you, it is essential that it be done in the open and free of any form of gratuity (bribery).
In America, we have allowed a lobbying industry to grow that yield extreme power over our government officials. To a large extent, they even write the legislation that is presented to Congress. For members of Congress to acquire committee assignments, they must raise money from lobbyists to pay the fees. Without going into further detail, it is corruption.
In brief: The U.S. lobbying industry is experiencing record-high spending, exceeding $4 billion annually at the federal level, with a heavy focus on tech, pharmaceutical, and financial sectors. Driven by major corporations and industry groups, lobbying in 2025–2026 is increasingly aimed at influencing AI regulation, healthcare policy, and tax legislation.
Essentially all of this bypasses the will of We the People as it is funded by special interests, usually to the detriment of the general welfare.
By in large, our elected representatives are more beholden to the lobbyists that their own constituency.
